How Do I Become a Foster Parent?

Hope Abel September 10, 2025 0 comments

What if instead of children waiting for homes, there were homes waiting for children? “It ought to be churches waiting on children, instead of children waiting on us” (Bishop WC Martin). This could be the case if each church in America had just one foster family.

Every county that is a FFM partner needs more foster parents. Children across the country are needing to be in loving homes, to be healing from trauma, and to be learning about the love of Jesus. Many people in the church are burdened to become foster parents or even just provide respite care.

One of the most common questions we receive at FFM is “How do I get started fostering?” and “Which agency do I choose?”. This past year, we created a First Steps of Fostering video to answer some of these questions. Check it out at our Vimeo channel: Fostering Family Ministries.

To put it simply (it will vary some by county):

  1. Decide you are ready to begin fostering.
  2. Choose whether you will foster through a private or public agency.
  3. Get certified as a foster parent (complete training, home study, background check, and fingerprinting etc.).
  4. Open your home and heart to children in foster care.

Some additional steps you may not find in your county regulations:

  1. Cover your whole foster care journey in prayer.
  2. Reach out to FFM and see about a Care Team to support your family as you foster. *Check out the statistics at the bottom of this page if you’d like more information.
  3. Keep your church in the loop on your progress in the foster care process so they can pray with and for you.
